Many of the people I met during The Gray Whale Cycle were experts in their field and it was great to learn more about their work. There are also many more experts I didn’t get to meet. Here, I’m going to be chatting further with some of the people I met, and hearing from people I didn’t manage to reach during my cycle.
This is a work in progress and my list of experts is long! So far we have:
As an Environmental Specialist for the Alaska Marine Highway System, Christy Harrington manages the company’s whale avoidance operating and reporting procedures. Christy has also worked on the gray whale monitoring program in the Okhotsk Sea off the coast of Sakhalin Island, Russia.
Clara Bird is a Masters student in the Geospatial Ecology of Marine Megafauna Laboratory of Oregon State University where she’s using drone footage to investigate the relationship between the body condition and behaviour of gray whales.
Assistant Professor Leigh Torres leads the Geospatial Ecology of Marine Megafauna Laboratory of Oregon State University and is interested in how marine species use their environment and how that information can inform conservation management plans.
